About Me

I am the CIO of Automated Payment Highway, Inc. (APH) – the parent company of billhighway.com|.net APH is located in Troy, MI, not exactly the hub of the internet but a respective business district and home to several fortune 500 companies.

Since joining the company in 2003 I’ve heavily lead our development teams, infrastructure and overall platform strategy. Most notably, in 2006, I had to put on my “CTO” hat as we completely overhauled our architecture to support the significant year-over-year growth we’ve been experiencing. In about 9 [exhausting] months, our development team (of about 12) ported our applications to a distributed SOA architecture, extending our existing nTier systems to scale-out vs. up.

Having invested heavily the past four years in platform architecture, my role changed slightly in 2008 switching gears to improve our development practice, growing our dev teams and introducing Agile as a software development methodology – effectively permitting me to “stop working IN the business and start working ON the business”.  2009 brings new challenges, as a growing business we must adapt, providing further value to existing clients while broadening our market position – to become the “QuickBooks” for Community Based Organizations.

Business/technology alignment is at the heart of the CIO role; being a passionate technologist and active market observer, (combined with an avid reader) I’m able to quickly digest trends and keep my thumb on the pulse of the internet economy – and hope to share techniques that can help you discover, decipher and disrupt!  With this blog I intend to cover relevant business and technology topics as well as some personal stuff to help educate those aspiring to build, grow and maintain a world-class business in today’s challenging economic climate.

Enjoy the ride,

Steve
